While Saint Patrick Catholic School students, faculty, and staff will be celebrating Earth Day on April 29, we held several activities this past Wednesday, April 22 to join in on the official Earth Day celebrations. For example, Fifth Grade student Elise D. asked to address the Middle School student body on being good stewards. True to the Wolfhound mission, teachers embraced her offer and found time for her to speak, which she did with grace and confidence. Elise reminded Wolfhounds about topics our Environmental Educator Meg Lassalle has discussed throughout the year, such as recycling and composting, and other ways Wolfhounds can make small contributions that add up to make a big difference in our world. We are grateful that our Wolfhounds know how to use their voices for good, and their teachers know how to encourage and inspire them!
Following the assembly, our Eighth Grade Wolfhounds set our Earth Day service bar high, as they cleaned up the pollinator garden, filled bird feeders, and watered plants outside the Hammond Outdoor Classroom. They even took the time to get our younger Wolfhounds in on the fun by showing them how they could help.
Our PreK students had a special Earth Day presentation of their own to learn about our Wolfhound Bee Hive. Our resident beekeepers, Heather Perry, Director of Auxiliary Programs, and Dan Pellegrino, Alumni Coordinator, explained about a beekeeper's job, and our youngest Wolfhounds loved learning about the different tasks of the queen, worker bees, guards, and drones in the hive.
Later in the day, PreK donned their own butterfly wings after learning about the life cycles of a butterfly. Thanks to the PreK Team, Mrs. Powers, Mrs. Betancourt, and Mr. Betancourt and their Teaching Assistants, Mrs. Steffen, Mrs. Kent, and Ms. Fail, for their creativity and ability to make learning so fun!
We are excited to see our Wolfhound students continue to find new and innovative ways to be good stewards of the Earth and to answer the late Pope Francis’ call to “care for our common home.” We can’t wait to celebrate Earth Day, as a community, this Wednesday!
