Care For Our Common Home

We’re excited to share that it’s been a successful first month of composting at Saint Patrick Catholic School! Over the past four weeks, Saint Patrick has teamed up with Tidewater Compost to find an environmentally friendly way to dispose of waste produced during food preparation in the dining hall. The kitchen staff has done an excellent job sorting compostable material and keeping it out of the garbage. To date, Saint Patrick Catholic School has successfully diverted 347 pounds of food and organic waste from our local landfills — a fantastic start!

In addition to the work being done on campus, we’ve seen great engagement from the greater Wolfhound community as well. We currently have seven families participating in Tidewater Compost’s residential services. It’s a strong start, and with Wolfhounds eligible for a discount, we’re excited to see this momentum grow in the weeks ahead!

We would like to thank Wolfhound parent Katie Howlett for making the initial connection with Tidewater Compost, our Environmental Educator Meg Lassalle for organizing the collection process at school, and Toya Butler, Rana Cuffee, Jessica Harrell, Pat Blackson, and Frederick Ferebee for their instrumental work in the kitchen to support this effort. We would also like to thank the Laudato Si’ Committee and our entire Saint Patrick Catholic School community for answering the call to “care for our common home” in the late Pope Francis’ encyclical published in 2015.

For more information on residential composting and how you and your family can take part in this initiative, please contact Mrs. Meg Lassalle at mlassalle@mystpcs.org!
