Bilingual Buddies
In a cross-curricular project, Saint Patrick Eighth Grade students wrote and illustrated children's books in Spanish and English using the conditional tense with the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie series by Laura Numeroff as a template. The project began as a yearly exercise in Ms. Seeley’s Eighth Grade Geometry class, as it aligned with the core concepts of conditional statements.
This year the project was extended across the Eighth Grade curriculum. The students' task was to create books using the skills acquired in their unit on Logic and Reasoning. Ms Seeley and Spanish teacher Sra. Mueller were able to collaborate on a common rubric, and students translated their sentences into Spanish. Religion class offered the students an opportunity to pick out scripture verse to use in the dedications of the books to their Kindergarten prayer buddies. Eighth Grade students earned credit in Spanish, English, Religion, and Math. They shared their creations with their Kindergarten prayer buddies, and the Kindergarten students were excited to learn that they could keep the books!
