Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Win!

The Third Grade is leading Saint Patrick Catholic School in the 2017-2018 TREX Company Recycling Challenge which promotes recycling and reusing plastic film. Our plastic bags and wraps can have a new life and become Earth-friendly composite deck and railings. The winning school receives a TREX bench for their school! We are collecting plastic film including plastic bags, zip lock bags, dry cleaning, newspaper sleeves, plastic overwrap, bread wrappers, and much more. All bags must be clean and dry to be accepted. Please save and bring your plastic film to school and place in one of our TREX recycling bins located in the Lobby, the Dining Hall, or the Gym.

The challenge runs from November 15 through April 15. Each month we turn our plastic “weight” into TREX. To date we have collected over 46 pounds of recycled materials.  If all of our Wolfhound families get involved, there is no telling how much our final tally will be. Be sure to tell you friends and neighbors, too. Please help us save our waterways, animals, land, and air by recycling your plastic film.

The Celtic Council is also encouraging environmental stewardship with recycling of cans and paper. Bins are located in each classroom, hallways, and main offices.

Saint Patrick’s efforts in environmental stewardship have been recently recognized on both the state and local level. In October, Saint Patrick received the “Virginia Naturally Award” recognizing the school for its commitment to environmental education and stewardship of Virginia’s natural resources. We also received the “2017 Environmental Resilience Award of Excellence” from the Norfolk Environmental Commission honoring the School’s contributions towards improving Norfolk’s environmental sustainability.

Keep up the great work Saint Patrick Wolfhounds!
