Little Green Thumbs!

The Little Sprouts Garden Club offers students from PreK-Second Grade the opportunity to explore where vegetables come from and how to plant them from seeds and small plants. Students also learn about nutrients in the soil and how composting benefits the planet. Thanks to a two-barrel composting system built by Wolfhound alumnus and Eagle Scout, Preston Aldridge (2018), club members help keep the garden fertile. In the event of inclement weather, these young Wolfhounds get together indoors to study different herbs and participate in hands-on projects like the building of homemade bird feeders. This fall, twelve students met weekly with Norfolk Master Gardeners to plan, plant, and tend to six different crops. And when it came time for the harvest, the Little Sprouts celebrated their abundance by giving what they grew to the Norfolk Catholic Worker. Their hard work directly benefited those most in need in our community. This is the Life of Vocation in action!

Led by Extended Care Director Heather Perry the Little Sprouts Garden Club enables students to carefully interact with our mother earth and guide them to become future leaders of a more sustainable environment. In the spring, the club plans to expand to fourteen members and plant eight different crops that will include tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans. The hands of God continue to work wonders through these little green thumbs!
