Mr. Hammond’s Blog – The 5th Annual Feast on the Feast

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Well, the Saint Patrick Catholic School community surely knows how to throw a party. The fifth annual “Feast on the Feast” was a great success as we welcomed our new Irish Wolfhounds into the school community. It is always an inspiration to see students step up to leadership positions. Kathleen K and Emily M certainly did that in welcoming the entire community to the feast and providing their own remarks. Father Kevin Segerblom gave a beautiful invocation and blessing. He is such a great priest and good friend. (And he is the Brother-in-Law of Mrs. Angie Segerblom, one of our core fifth grade teachers.) Then on to the Irish dancers who mesmerized the crowd, especially the young students. The Joly sisters, Celeste and Amelia, provided the crowd of 500 with a wonderful Irish tune on the flute and cello. And who would have known, our own band instructor, Michael Finn, also plays guitar and sings Irish ballads. He led the party in singing some Irish favorites for nearly an hour. But that’s not all, the Celtic Council (our student council) organized and provided games and entertainment for all students. Their contribution was a great act of leadership and service. We are proud of them! The entire evening seemed to evaporate in the wink of an eye! What a lovely moment and a true expression of who we are and what we are becoming. Welcome new Wolfhounds!

Million Pennies Project for Haiti off to an amazing start – 104,224 pennies collected

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Our school-wide Million Pennies Project to benefit Maison Fortune School & Orphanage and the Saint Gabriel Parish School in Haiti has generated a lot excitement among our students. Our community has been challenged to raise one million pennies in 18 months’ time and we are off to a strong start. The tally as of Mar 19 was 104, 224 pennies!

Our 5th graders, with the help of Tim Smith, our Director of Facilities, designed a container that would be able to hold a million pennies. A talented parent, Stewart McLinda, volunteered to build the container.

The first pennies went into the newly built container on Mar 19 by our middle school students.

There was a lot of excitement as classes watched their first pennies dumped into the container.

Parents and teachers are encouraged to join together in an effort to identify the progress made by students within the pillars of the Graduate at Graduation document and to make strategic plans to augment the work that is being done at home and in the classroom. This is a non-crisis type interaction between the parent and teacher on behalf of the student. The time for this collaboration is open ended and scheduled between parent and teacher.
