Saint Patrick Students Participate in Hurricane Relief Efforts

Katrina's impact inspires fund raising, clothing drives.

Students at St. Patrick Catholic School in Norfolk, a school in its first year of operation, displayed the virtue of charity in overwhelming fashion in response to the need of the victims of hurricane Katrina.

Despite being a brand new school, and all that entails, the students organized themselves and were able to lend significant assistance to the relief efforts. Through a weekend “Lemonade for Louisiana” sale organized by the fifth grade class, and classroom donations, the students of St. Patrick Catholic School have raised almost $2,400.00 to aid those devastated by Katrina.

Most significantly, a student initiated clothing drive produced two large shipping pallets of clothes, toys, and personal items for shipment south. Logistics of the drive were facilitated by Lt. Commander and Mrs. Patrick Fulgham. Mrs. Fulgham directs the before & after school programs at St. Patrick Catholic School and Lt. CDR Fulgham is commanding officer of the Mobile Security Detachment Unit #22 based in Portsmouth, VA and supervised the shipment of the pallets to New Orleans. They have two children attending St. Patrick Catholic School.

In addition to these efforts, St. Patrick Catholic School is in the process of accepting two students from the storm-ravaged areas. The first student is expected to arrive at St. Patrick on Friday, September 9th. Other students are expected from the Gulf States over the course of the next several weeks.
