Foreign Language ProgramAt Saint Patrick, we believe that foreign language study at an early age results in a host of positive benefits for students. The study of foreign language and culture can enhance cognitive development and basic skills performance; expand young minds' intercultural views; improve memory, listening and general communications skills; and develop high levels of proficiency in advanced language skill courses. Pre-K through 4th Grade: By using quick-moving and fun activities in pre-kindergarten through the fourth grade, students will find the Spanish language accessible and enjoyable. This approach will allow them to enter a more formal study in middle school with better preparation, more motivation, less apprehension and greater success. 5th–6th Grade: Latin will be formally taught in the fifth and sixth grades. A "maintenance program" of Spanish will be provided to students in these grades with the rationale that they will maintain their language utility during this time. 7th–8th Grade: Spanish will be offered in the seventh and eighth grades. Students in middle school may also take Spanish in our summer program, or choose an online Spanish program to reinforce or accelerate their foreign language training. Other foreign language offerings will be considered in middle school as interests warrant. |
