A.C.E. Student Handbook
Rainy Day Movies
While we don't make it a daily practice, occasionally it is fun to relax on special occasions and watch a film. During multi-center activities in the A.C.E. Classroom and on the occasional rainy day, the children will have the opportunity to watch a G or PG rated movie. For those children who do not wish to watch a movie, they will be offered an alternate activity (games, puzzles, art or reading). Additionally, because we know that every child doesn’t share the same maturity level and that parents differ on what they view as appropriate, please contact the A.C.E. Director at sjessen@stpcs.org or call 757 440-5500, ext 745 if you do not want your child to participate in movie time.
Behavior Problems
Because the children have been in classrooms all day long, naturally a little bit of release from the day is to be expected. At After Care, we believe in positive discipline and choice theory as the school does. However, when a child’s behavior becomes violent, disrespectful or inappropriate, it will be addressed. These are the steps we will follow:
First, we will speak to the child about his/her behavior. We will discuss the reasons why they acted in an inappropriate manner. Then the child will formulate his/her own success plan.
If the behavior continues, we will give the child a reflection sheet that they must fill out and parents will be notified.
If the problem becomes unmanageable, the student will speak to the principal of the school with his/her parents.
Emergency Medical Care
If a child needs emergency attention during After Care, the parents will be notified immediately and an ambulance will be called. If the situation is not an emergency, the parents will be notified and the child’s physician will be called.
Uniforms
Because of the activities during After Care, school uniforms aren’t always the most appropriate attire. We want to preserve your children's uniforms as long as possible, so we allow the children to change into appropriate after school attire. We request after school attire be comfortable and conservative. Sweatpants are not allowed. If shorts are worn, they should be mid-thigh length (no short shorts). Mid-drift should not show. For safety reasons, sandals, flip-flops and open toe shoes are not permitted. Tennis shoes are required because we do play in the gym most days, and we can not allow dress shoes on the gym floor.
Pick Up Safety Policy
All parents must pick up their child or children at the front desk/lobby. An After Care employee will be there to assist you and radio for your child or children to meet you in the lobby. This is to minimize confusion when there are busy periods during the day. It is still necessary to initial and write down your time of departure. This system proved to be very effective and efficient. Grazie for your assistance.
Mandatory Homework Time
All children will be given the opportunity to have homework time each day. If the children have no homework, they can read, study or work on age appropriate worksheets provided during this time. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten will have a story read to them at this time. If you wish that your child be exempt from this time, please contact the A.C.E. Director. If you would like your child to participate in this time, please make sure that you do not pick up your child until after 5:00 p.m.
